Baseball swing analysis is often tricky and it takes a trained baseball eye to notice the little inefficiencies in the swing. It is especially difficult to notice swing mechanics when players are hitting balls, because the results often mislead observers further, as you will notice below. However, even the inexperienced coach can use the following tips to help with the baseball swing analysis.
I wish I had a dollar for every time this has happened at one of my lessons. A hitter walks in and he/she, or their parent, informs me that they are popping up everything in games. "OK," I respond, "That is good to know." I then proceed to pitch a few balls to them, wherein every batted ball is a ground ball. A similar occurrence also is common, when a student tells me they are a strict pull hitter, never hitting balls to the opposite field. Once again, when I pitch a few balls, they hit every ball to the opposite field, or jam themselves on many pitches.
This may seem confusing, but in reality, it is not an extra ordinary occurrence, because an incorrect baseball swing produces different results, depending on the speed and location of pitches. If the pitches are different from what they are seeing in games, the results can be the opposite, the case in the above scenarios.
One way for inexperienced people to figure out when players have a good fundamental swing, or not, is to have players take some practice swings (often call dry swings because no ball is involved) at the knee-high level. Players, who have incorrect hitting mechanics, will not be able to swing the bat to the low pitch. This is the most common scenario and is an indication that hitters are not leading with their hands to the ball and using a long arm swing.
Of course, some batters are the opposite and upper cut with their swing. The uppercut is usually easier to recognize, even by the untrained coach. Having hitters with an upper cut swing at chest high level will usually expose these type swings.
When inexperienced coaches still have trouble noticing the arc of a players swing, they should try it this way. Have batters stand belly button away from a net or tarp and take swings to various levels. In this manner, coaches will be better able to notice the swing path.
As implied, when players can only sing to certain levels and not to both the highs and lows of the strike zone, it will show up with dry swings. Unless, players can swing to all levels of the strike zone, something is wrong with the baseball swing mechanics.
When a batting tee is around, setting balls at the highest or lowest levels of the strike zone may show the same results. However, many hitters may have found a way to hit all balls without great hitting mechanics, which is the beginning of bad habits forming. That is why baseball swing analysis is sometimes easier with swinging without hitting a ball.
Of course, once this baseball-swing analysis is completed and deficiencies in the swing are noticeable, ways to fix those problems must begin and an experienced hitting coach is necessary for that.
